What makes Paul Simon's Graceland album so significant is that it was a comeback album of sorts. It was his seventh solo studio work (1986) but it came after a time when his popularity was on the decline. After phenomenal sucess with the folk duo Simon & Garfunkel in the 60s, Simon embarked on a solo career. His first few post Simon and Garfunkel albums (Paul Simon Self-Titled, There Goes Rhymin' Simon, Still Crazy After All These Years, Greatest Hits) had produced a handful of top 40 singles. Towards the end of the 70s and throughout the early 80s however, his subsequent albums (One Trick Pony, Hearts and Bones, Trouble in Paradise) did not replicate the chart sucess of their predecessors. Then came the Graceland album. Simon later commented that before writing the Graceland album he felt he had 'nothing to lose' that he had 'lost his inspiration'. Then he heard a recording by the Boyoyo Boys, an instrumental called "Gumboots: Accordion Jive Volume II". So he travelled to South Africa to complete the Graceland album. Many South African musicians and groups (like Ladysmith Black Mambazo) played on the album with Simon. The introduction of those unique sounds and uplifting vibes made Graceland a worldwide favourite and at age 45 put Paul Simon back in the spotlight again.
You Can Call Me Al - The names in the song was inspired by a party that Simon went to with his wife-at-the-time Peggy Harper. The most of the party accidently reffered to Paul as 'Al' and Peggy as 'Betty'. - Paul Simon didn't like the original music video that was made. The replacement video is the one we know and love now - Chevy Chase lip-syncing Paul Simons vocals, Simon looking bored, and both of them miming playing instruments. - The African Rhythms on You Can Call Me Al were supplied by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Paul Simon later produced two of their albums.
Graceland - The title track of the album, it was written about Simon's thoughts during a trip to Graceland with his ex-wife Carrie Fisher. - Simon considers Graceland to be the best single he's ever written. - Backing vocals on the studio version are done by the Everly Brothers.
