AC/DC - Back in Black

alt

The death of ACDC frontman Bon Scott left some pretty big boots to fill. In 1980, the world waited with baited breath to see if Brian Johnson would have the goods.

Back in Black was the seventh album by ACDC but the first without Bon Scott on lead. As it turns out Brian Johnson had what it takes, and Back in Black remains the second highest selling album of all time - worldwide - with estimated sales of 49 million copies. It also remains the highest selling album by a band and an Australian act.

Bon Scott had helped with the composition of some of the tracks on Back in Black before his unexpected death, and Brian Johnson and Angus and Malcom Young continued work on those songs as well as added additional ones.

Angus Young said the all black cover of Back in Black was 'a sign of mourning' for the late Bon Scott.

Back in Black was one of the first records produced by Robert "Mutt" Lange - who later worked with Def Leppard, Celine Dion, and Shania Twain (whom he married in 1993).

Hells Bells

Hells Bells was written to commemorate the death of AC/DC's former lead singer, Bon Scott.

After it became a hit, ACDC added a 2 tonne bell to their stage show.

It was one the soundtrack to the 1986 Stephen King movie Maximum Overdrive.

Shoot To Thrill

Shoot to Thrill was most recently included on the soundtrack to the movie Iron Man 2.

Back In Black

Brian Johnson recounted writing the song to Mojo Magazine in 2009:  "they said, 'it can't be morbid - it has to be for Bon and it has to be a celebration. I thought, 'Well nae pressure there, then' (laughs). I just wrote what came into my head, which at the time seemed like mumbo, jumbo. 'Nine lives. Cats eyes. Abusing every one of them and running wild.' The boys got it though. They saw Bon's life in that lyric."

The Beastie Boys once sampled Back in Black for their song Rock Hard. But they did so without ACDC's permission. When they asked ACDC is they could incude it on a greatest hits compilation Angus Young replied 'Nothing against you guys, but we just don't endorse sampling.'

You Shook Me All Night Long

Brian Johnson said inspiration came from seeing images of American girls while recording Back In Black in the Bahamas.

You Shook Me All Night Long also later appeared on their album Who Made Who.

It's thought that the title was inspired by a Muddy Waters song "You Shook Me" which features the line "you shook me all night long".

Rock N Roll Ain't Noise Pollution

Just For Fun!

Hayseed Dixie, an American Bluegrass band, in 2001, released a cover album of ACDC songs in a style they called 'rockgrass' - bluegrass combined with rock.

The album was called: A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC. It was actually quite good.
