10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 , 4, 3, 2, 1 - although you're more likely to remember calling it 10 to 1 or 10, 9 ,8 was released in 1982 and remained on the Aussie charts for 171 weeks (after peaking at number 3) -  not a bad effort hey?

It was the album that made Midnight Oil superstars in Australia. The biggest singles were Power and The Passion, Read About It, US Forces and Short Memory.

 

Power and the Passion

- Power and The Passion is the only Oils songs to feature a Drum Solo by Rob HIrst (Rumour has it it's not just any drum kit either - but one that had some strange objects in it that never made it in one piece).

- Power and The Passion has been listed by the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) Top 30 Australian Songs of All Time in 2001

- Power and The Passion features that Peter Garrett dance move that you may have tried to copy after a few tinnies.

- Read About It - Targets the Australian Media (and Rupert Murdoch in particular)

- The Oil's performed Read About It at WaveAid

 

US Forces

- US Forces denounces the US Armed forces - and the song has since been used to demonstrate the view that Peter Garrett 'sold out' to join the ALP.

- The Chaser's War on Everything parodied it as 'US Bases'
